Half-Blood Prince was epic. Brilliant. Superb. Magnificent.
I even dressed up! Sort of...I wore my school shirt and tie and black tights with my black cardi. And this dude from Oporto took a photo since he thought it was so funny. Cough.
I'm not such a big fan of the films like I am with the books, but this movie was worth the seven-month delay. Of course, they wandered off the book's plot, but they still did it pretty well. I'll try to talk about it without spoiling too much because I know that it's only just opened in the US. And hopefully everyone's read the book.
The start was great. It was a great "bang", just like Yates (the director) intended. Then after the Millennium Bridge part, we see the waitress hitting on Harry and telling him that she gets off at 11 (that means she finishes work at 11...in case you don't get the British talk) and Harry looking hopeful until Dumbledore shows up and whisks him away to Slughorn's house. Baha. So, they totally messed up the Slughorn bit. In the book, Dumbledore says that the thing that gave it away was the fact that there was no Dark Mark above the the dwelling. In the movie he said it was the dragon's blood that gave it away. But they did the whole flying objects stuff part really well. It was, well, magical. And Dumbledore does his hilarious, "take my arm" thing which makes everyone giggle. But then again, most of us were just high from excitement. I know I was.
When Harry arrives at the Burrow, there's a very cute scene using the several storeys and winding staircase. And we get to see the first sparks between Harry and Ginny. A lot of "oooooh~!!!" from the audience.
Onboard the Hogwarts Express, Harry spots Draco and decides to follow him (with the help of his Invisibilty cloak of course) and eavsedrops, however Draco discovers him..and you know what happens. But instead of Tonks finding him, Luna does with her funny glasses things. She says something about Wrackspurts and then walks with him up to the castle.
So Harry gets the HBP textbook and everything, gets the Felix, etc. The movie really didn't stress the HBP obsession enough. Nor the Draco obsession. The film was too romance-centred. Like from the very beginning, Lavender is dropping hints. At Fred and George's shop, she was there batting her eyelashes at Ron. And for the first quarter of the film it was:
Lavender wanting Ron,
Ron sort of confused since he kind of wants Hermione,
Harry wanting Ginny,
Harry and Ron annoyed at Dean for getting intimate with Ginny,
Cormac wanting Hermione,
Hermione slightly appalled at Cormac, and
Ron slightly annoyed at Cormac.
Then after the first Quidditch match (which was excellent):
Lavender absolutely fawning over Ron (she was so annoying, so clingy and the extreme example of the worst girlfriend type),
Ron progressively getting annoyed at Lavender,
Hermione loathing Ron,
Hermione getting together with Cormac temporarily to annoy Ron,
Harry still interested in Ginny,
Ginny's getting more interested in Harry, and
Dumbledore saying pretty gay but amusing remarks.
The Quidditch was great. Well it might've just seemed that way because we haven't had Quidditch in a movie since the third one. Cormac was pretty hot. He would look great with Hermione. He totally owned Ron. Anyway, Quidditch was epic. The graphics are getting better and better and it wasn't so brief like in Prisoner.
FIREFOX IS ANNOYING ME, IT'S NOT PICKING UP MY SPELLING MISTAKES.
Continuing on, I love Quidditch so much as it is, and this movie totally delivered. Actually, no it didn't, they didn't give us the second match when Cormac hits the Bludger at Harry! BAH! That's lame!!!!! I would have liked very much to see Cormac getting really pissed, it would've been hot!
Um...the Slug Club bit was funny. Harry enjoyed dessert very much. Watch it and you'll see what I mean.
Just trying to think of random points...
There was actually another funny bit they didn't put in the trailers! I was so glad, seriously, it felt like we had seen all the funny bits already. It felt like we had seen the whole damn movie in the trailers.
The cave part was so intense. The music, and everything...gosh, it was so Lord of the Rings like. The potion drinking part was excellent. They didn't make it what it looked like on the cover of the books, so it was...refreshing. The Inferi...oh my gosh, you could feel the whole cinema jump. It was pretty scary. Which reminds me. SECTUMSEMPRA. My favourite scene in the whole book, AND THEY STUFFED IT!!!! I wanted to see some pretty gruesome action but NO, they had to make it child-proof!!! GAAAH!! I wanted to see blood gushing out of Draco's face like it was meant to be!! Trust Yates to ruin my favourite scene. Dumbledore's death was so...under-done. Snape just rushes in and just kills him, like that. There wasn't enough buildup of the suspense. Well I wasn't expecting better since they ruined Sirius' death in the previous movie. Yates is just not that good at deaths. But, after the death, when you see Dumbledore sprawled across the grass with the students and staff looking on, that was intense. Harry closes his eyes, McGonnagall raises her wand, and the rest of the school population copy her. The scene was very dramatic, there was no speaking, just the orchestral music in the background. Speaking of which...the cheapskates used two of the same songs from Order!!!! Dumbledore's Army and Fireworks were both used again in this film! How disappointing; we know Nicholas Hooper is nothing compared to John Williams, so why not show us some new music?! I think using different music for the opening credits instead of the traditional Hedwig's Theme (or Ginny as it is called on the soundtrack fo Half-Blood). Sorry this paragraph was a bit long.
I'll elaborate more on the cave part shall I? Personally it was a tad rushed. Going to the cave I mean. Like one moment Harry and Dumbledore are talking about Slughorn, and then the next they were standing on that rock in the middle of the ocean! The whole standing-on-the-rock-in-the-middle-of-th
e-ocean thing was a bit over the top. With the strong pounding waves and loud melodramatic music, it felt too epic for a Potter film. It was a bit pointless, if you ask me. Looked great in the trailers, but it was just a bit too much. Inside the cave...all I can say is WOW. It was done faithful to the book what with the blood payment and everything. Then the boat...uh...not so great. I didn't get the whole pulling of the chains and the flying lumos thing. Once we got to see the potion. Oh dear. Well, it wasn't the basin that we saw on the cover at all. It was like a crystal stand sort of. And the "goblet" wasn't a goblet at all. It looked like a shell. But this change was good. It fitted in more with the location. Once again, I must say, brace yourself for the Inferi.
I really don't like Gambon's Dumbledore. He's too...un-Dumbledore-ish. He's too aggressive, not the calm, complacent Dumbledore we know from the books.
So overall, great film. Even people who aren't fans of the book will enjoy it. But like all the other films, if you haven't read the books, then you won't really understand what's going on half the time. As a Potter fan, I would rate it 7.5/10 simply because they used the same songs again and they messed up my most favourite scene in the whole series. And they focused too much on love rather than the crucial plot.
After watching HPHBP, my friends and I went to the arcade and played DDR. I feel terrible, I can't DDR anymore. Dance Dance Revolution that is. I used to be a total PRO. But now, I can't jump fast enough. It's horrible. I feel so OLD!! Yeah, if I go to the arcade, I DDR before anything else. Well there's nothing else that really appeals to me. I'm hopeless at shooting with guns, racing and those hooking soft toy machines.
Want to know something incredibly stupid? Livejournal's spell check is American spelling only. There must be a way to change it so whenever I write "favourite" it's not marked as incorrect. And the suggestion for "Dumbledore" is "Tumbledown". I did not know that was a word. Microsoft and Firefox and stuff with spell check should just add Potter terms into their dictionary. I mean, they named a constellation after Draco, so why not add words to the dictionary?
Well, this has been a very big post. Well it was a very eventful day~! If you do go see the film, I want to hear your opinions about it! I'm still quite excited...well giddy at least.
